The Higham Oil Group was founded in 2007 with the aim of saving some money by buying heating oil in bulk. By combining all of the individual orders into one single large order means that people only wanting to order the minimum of 500 litres can still benefit from the negotiated discounted price. Originally the group consisted of a few neighbours in the Suffolk village of Higham. Now the group has just under 500 members, not only from Higham but also from surrounding villages, all of them saving money. On average the group saves around £3000 per order.

Who runs it and why would I want to join?

It is a volunteer run group run by Chris Mortimer who is also a member of the group so has a self interest in getting the best deal. Chris arranges nine orders per year using local oil suppliers. He also aims to provide the personal touch to the group, someone to help when there's order/delivery problems. Living in Barrow, a neighbouring village to Higham, he also knows a number of people personally. Membership and the use of the group is free, nobody makes any money out of this group. As well as getting a good price per litre because we order in bulk, we also help reduce delivery trips around the villages therefore helping reduce pollution and wear and tear of our roads. It also saves you from the inconvenience of phoning up all the suppliers trying to get the best deal. The only limitation is the postcode where you live, this has to be an IP28, IP29 or a CB8 postcode. This range of codes may increase if the need is there.
